A man originally from India has been sentenced to seven years in prison by a court in Canada. The sentence was given even though he was not present in court, because he had already left the country after being found guilty.

The case was handled by the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. The man, identified only as H.B., was convicted of serious crimes including s*xual assault. He was in a relationship with a woman who had also recently moved to Canada from India.

The court explained that the woman trusted him and believed she had found a life partner. They met through the dating app Bumble in late 2022. Both came from similar backgrounds, which helped them connect quickly.

However, things soon turned harmful. The court heard that the man forced the woman into unwanted physical acts many times. He also threatened her by saying he would share her private photos with her family if she did not obey him. Because she was new to the country, she felt scared and believed no one would support her.

The judge described the acts as painful and degrading. The woman continued the relationship out of fear, not choice. Reports say there were around 30 incidents of assault during this time.

After the jury found him guilty in October 2025, the man quickly left Canada. He crossed into the United States and later travelled to Europe. Because he did not return, the court decided to continue the sentencing without him.

At the time, H.B. was working as a software developer in Canada. He had come to the country as a student several years earlier.

The victim shared that the experience deeply affected her mental health. She said she felt shame, fear, and self-doubt after the incidents. She even deleted her social media accounts because she was afraid the photos might be shared.
