The Indian Parliament passed one of the most significant and historic bills in recent years when it comes to the amendment of Public representative act 1951. The same was confirmed by the union home minister Amit Shah in Parliament today, and he is a look into the story.

Incidentally, union home minister Amit Shah proposed a new bill, which was later cleared, and what this essentially does is that restricts a person from holding key positions like PM and CM if he gets arrested.

The bills also provide that an accused politician must obtain bail within 30 days of arrest. If they fail to secure bail within 30 days, then on the 31st day, either the Prime Minister or the Chief Minister will have to remove them, otherwise, by law, they will cease to remain eligible to function. Once granted bail through due legal process, such leaders may be reinstated to their positions.

No person who is arrested and in jail can function as Prime Minister, Chief Minister, or Minister in the Union or State Government.

In recent years, the country has witnessed shocking instances where chief ministers or ministers continued to run governments from jail without resigning. So, the new bill is going to seriously crackdown on the same.

However, the opposition parties have taken serious offence to this bill as they have pointed out that the central government could misuse it to overpower the regional government. It has to be seen what kind of general public feedback this bill would generate in the days to follow.
