By: Tupaki Desk | 7 Sept 2025 12:22 PM ISTIt is already known that the United States and India are currently at crossroads due to the prevailing oil trade situation between India and Russia. The United States president is least pleased with this as he has been imposing massive tariffs against India in the process.
In this context, Peter Navarro, who earlier worked as a trade adviser to Donald Trump, made controversial comments on India through Twitter. He claimed that India was buying oil from Russia only to make profits and that this money was helping Russia in the Ukraine war. He also said India’s high tariffs were hurting U.S. jobs.
Soon after, X users fact-checked his post with a community note. They pointed out that India buys Russian oil mainly for its energy security and not for profit. They also reminded that these purchases do not break any international sanctions.
The note further highlighted that the United States itself continues to import some goods, like uranium, from Russia, showing a double standard. Many users called Navarro’s statement “hypocritical.”
Navarro was angry about this fact-check. He attacked Elon Musk, accusing him of allowing “propaganda” on the platform. He called the note “crap” and insisted that India was still profiteering from Russian oil.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs strongly rejected Navarro’s remarks. The MEA said his comments were “inaccurate and misleading.” India maintains that its oil trade with Russia is completely legal and essential to meet the country’s energy needs.
