Before his inauguration, Donald Trump, set to assume the presidency of the United States once more, has stirred controversy with neighboring nations. Trump disclosed plans to incorporate Canada, Greenland, and the Panama Canal into the United States. Additionally, he proposed renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the ‘Gulf of America’. In a spirited response, Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum, during a media briefing, humorously suggested the United States be renamed ‘Mexican America’. To underscore her point, she displayed a 17th-century world map, highlighting that North America was once referred to as ‘Mexican America’. Sheinbaum emphasized, "Why shouldn't we call the United States 'Mexican America'? It sounds pretty good, doesn't it…? He (Trump) talked about the name. We are just telling him about it," directly challenging Trump's renaming proposal.

Sheinbaum's remarks came as a robust rebuttal to Trump's recent statements, where he expressed a desire to rebrand the Gulf of Mexico and voiced concerns over illegal immigration and drug cartels from Mexico. Trump, projecting his ambitions for territorial expansion, remarked, "I want to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. That's the right thing to do..! Mexico should stop millions of people from entering our country illegally. The drug cartels are running that country," signaling a tough stance against Mexico regarding immigration and drug trafficking.

Despite the tensions sparked by Trump's comments, Sheinbaum articulated a hope for amicable relations between Mexico and the United States under Trump's forthcoming presidency. She implied that, despite the provocative nature of Trump's plans and comments, there remains an opportunity for both countries to work towards a constructive partnership. This desire for a positive bilateral relationship underscores the complex dynamics at play as Trump prepares to take office on January 20.

In addressing Trump's expansionist declarations and his intentions to modify geographical nomenclature to reflect American sovereignty, Sheinbaum's intervention serves as a reminder of the historical and cultural ties binding the two nations. Her use of a historical map to illustrate her point subtly underscores the longstanding interconnectedness of the United States and Mexico, challenging Trump's vision with a blend of humor and historical context.
