The discussion is about the highest paid prime minister in the world, and we have quickly shifted to the Prime Minister of Singapore as he has comfortably topped the list.
Singapore will raise Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s annual pay package by S$1.4 million which $1.1 million in American currency. Wong says he will donate the increase to charity over the next five years.
For comparison, U.S. President Donald Trump earns $400,000 a year, while UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham earns about $230,000.
To put that into perspective, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s annual package will jump by more than 60%, from S$2.2 million to S$3.6 million. He is saying that he will done at the majority of this to charity, but the public reaction has been anything but positive.
The government argues high salaries help attract top talent and deter corruption. But with Singaporeans worried about rising living costs and job security, critics are calling the raise unnecessary.
But the fact of the matter is that the Singapore Prime Minister happens to be the highest paid Prime Minister in the world by a comfortable margin. To compare that with the Indian standard Prime Minister Modi receives around ₹4,00,000 salary per month.
