She was a popular actress in the 90s who later ventured into politics. She became successful in politics as well. She won the elections and became the MP, making the first independent MP in the state. What will be her step in politics is the question many have in the wake of the elections. She ended the suspense.

Actress-turned-politician Sumalatha took a shocking decision as the Telugu actress will not be in the election race. She joined the BJP and also decided to not contest the elections as the Janata Dal (Secular) candidate will be fielded there, reports say.

Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, Sumalatha announced that she would be joining the BJP. Besides this, she will not contest the elections and HD Kumaraswamy will be the joint candidate of the BJP-JDS alliance in the polls.

Both parties have decided to join hands for the polls and there was a big confusion on the candidate as Sumalatha is the sitting Mandya candidate. To create a space for Kumaraswamy she is staying away from the polls.

What Sumalatha did is not surprising for many as she has been supporting the BJP. On many occasions, she extended her support to the party and spoke highly about the party and its leadership. Earlier it was reported that she might join the party. But that did not happen.

BJP also indirectly helped Sumalatha. When she contested the 2019 elections as an independent candidate, BJP did not field any candidate. Though the star heroes like Darshan and Yash campaigning helped her, BJP’s decision also played its part is what many say.

In the 2019 elections, she won the elections by defeating actor-politician Nikhil Kumaraswamy with over 1.25 lakh votes. Cut to 2024 she is not contesting elections for Nikhil’s father who was the Chief Minister.
