By: Tupaki Desk | 30 Jun 2026 5:49 PM ISTIt is already known that the Indian authorities have been very firm with regard to the decision to blend ethanol with petrol for automobile consumption. There is a lot of public backlash on this, but there hasn’t been any consolidated action against it.
There is very interesting development involving the Supreme Court of India and let us look into the story that is currently in development.
The Supreme Court has ordered that the existing ethanol allocation for the 2025–26 supply year remain unchanged while hearing petitions by the Centre and oil marketing companies.
This came in response to an order challenging a Karnataka High Court order on increasing an ethanol manufacturer's quota.
The Attorney General argued that altering quotas could disrupt India's ethanol blending policy. The Centre told the court that the E20 programme is still in an experimental phase, with no conclusive evidence of vehicle damage.
The Indian government said the policy supports energy security, farmers' income, and environmental goals. But they did not hold any regard for the public backlash that has been coming up against this ethanol blending, which is the point of concern here.
It appears that the central government authorities are still firm on ethanol blending, despite the public backlash, and this could be the continued method of operation to this effect.
