Over the last few years, several states across India have been facing complaints about religious and caste disparity issues. And now we have another interesting development in this regard with the Supreme Court delivering a new judgement.

The Supreme Court of India has recently reaffirmed a crucial legal position on Scheduled Caste status and religious conversion, sparking fresh national debate.

In its latest ruling today, the court clearly stated that individuals who convert to religions such as Christianity or Islam will lose their Scheduled Caste status and all associated constitutional benefits.

The judgment is based on the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950, which restricts SC recognition to followers of Hinduism, Sikhism, and Buddhism. The court emphasized that this rule is absolute, meaning no exceptions can be made once a person adopts another religion.

This ruling came while upholding a case from Andhra Pradesh, where a man who had converted to Christianity attempted to seek protection under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The court rejected the claim, stating that a person cannot simultaneously profess another religion and claim Scheduled Caste identity.

The decision has major implications for reservations in education, jobs, and political representation. It also strengthens the existing legal framework, which links caste based protections to specific religious contexts.

However, the verdict has reignited debate across the country. Critics argue that caste discrimination often continues even after conversion, while supporters say the current system is rooted in historical realities.
