What’s Happening: 2 Indian Women Die Using ChatGPT?

While people have started to use ChatGPT and other AI resources to progress in their careers, two Indian women have used this artificial intelligence platform to kill themselves.

Two young women were found dead inside a washroom at a temple in Surat, Gujarat, in a shocking incident that has raised serious questions about mental health and the misuse of technology. Police said the victims, aged 18 and 20, were close friends who had known each other since childhood and were studying in different colleges.

According to investigators, the two girls left their homes on March 6 telling their families they were going to college. When they did not return and their phones became unreachable, worried family members approached the police.

A search was launched, and officers later traced their mobile location to a Swaminarayan temple in the Dindoli area of Surat.

A scooter belonging to one of the girls was found parked outside the temple. CCTV footage reportedly showed both of them entering the temple washroom together. When they did not come out for a long time, temple staff alerted authorities. The door was eventually forced open, and the girls were found unconscious inside.

Police recovered syringes and bottles of anaesthesia from the washroom and suspect the women injected themselves with the drugs. Investigators also found that their phones contained online searches, including queries on ChatGPT about suicide methods and anaesthesia injections.

Authorities have registered a case of accidental death and sent the bodies for postmortem while continuing to investigate the circumstances behind the tragic incident.
