Not Paying Tax? Get Ready For Deportation!
Sweden has proposed a new rule for immigrants that requires them to maintain an “honest living”.
By: Tupaki Desk | 26 March 2026 12:36 PM ISTThe global countries have started to impose new restrictions when it comes to immigration policies, and now we have Sweden as the newest addition to the list.
Sweden has proposed a new rule for immigrants that requires them to maintain an “honest living”. Under this rule, migrants could face deportation or lose their residence permits if they fail to meet certain standards, such as paying taxes, avoiding fines, or not misusing welfare or immigration systems.
The government also wants to give authorities more power to revoke permits in cases where immigrants provide false information, threaten security, or break other serious rules. This proposal is supported by Sweden’s centre‑right government and the anti‑immigration Sweden Democrats.
If parliament approves the bill, it could take effect as early as July. Human rights groups have raised concerns that the term honest living is vague and could be used unfairly, potentially affecting equality and personal freedoms.
Sweden has been tightening its immigration rules in recent years due to concerns about integration and public safety. Supporters of the new rule say it will encourage immigrants to behave responsibly and integrate better into Swedish society, while critics warn that it could give authorities too much discretion in judging people’s behavior.
