Record-Breaking U.S. Voter Turnout: Top States Revealed!
On the other hand, some states like Texas and South Carolina, which have stricter voting laws, saw lower participation.
By: Tupaki Desk | 14 Oct 2024 5:46 AM GMTVoter turnout in the 2020 U.S. presidential election reached a significant high, with nearly 67% of eligible voters casting their ballots. This was the largest turnout seen in over 100 years. Some states performed even better, with Minnesota leading the way, as around 79.21% of its voters participated.
Other states with strong turnout numbers included Colorado at 76.69%, Oregon and Washington, both at 75.33%, and Wisconsin at 75.04%. These states have consistently shown high turnout rates, with Minnesota standing out since 1980, helped by same-day voter registration and tight local elections. People in Minnesota are also more engaged in their communities, which encourages more voters to show up.
On the other hand, some states like Texas and South Carolina, which have stricter voting laws, saw lower participation. However, even in states with fewer voting restrictions, like New York and Hawaii, turnout was lower than expected. Over the past ten years, voter turnout has been gradually rising, thanks in part to early voting and absentee ballots.
Looking ahead to the 2024 election, a growing number of young voters have registered, especially in key battleground states. Many organizations are working hard to increase voter participation even further for the upcoming election.
