Former U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton has said that America may have made a serious mistake in its policy toward India.
He explained that the Trump administration’s move to impose heavy tariffs on Indian imports, especially because of India’s purchase of Russian oil, could push New Delhi closer to Russia and China. Bolton called this an “unforced error,” meaning a mistake that could have been avoided.
The U.S. has placed almost 50% tariffs on Indian goods, including an extra 25% penalty linked to Russian oil. At the same time, similar action has not been taken against China, which continues to buy oil from Russia. Bolton believes this unequal treatment has upset India, describing the reaction in New Delhi as “incandescent,” or extremely angry.
This situation could harm America’s long-term strategy. For years, the U.S. has tried to keep India away from Russia and China, but these tariffs may do the opposite.
In fact, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already invited Russian President Vladimir Putin for the upcoming India–Russia Annual Summit. Modi is also planning to visit China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meeting later this month. This shows India is keeping its options open.
