The Donald Trump administration in the United States has been taking pretty significant measures against legal immigration. It has now been confirmed that immigration authorities are cracking down on naturalised United States citizens who had acquired citizenship through illegal means.

The U.S. Department of Justice has announced that it will now prioritize revoking the citizenship of naturalized Americans who are found to have gained citizenship through fraud, false information, or later committed serious crimes.

This includes people involved in terrorism, gang activity, war crimes, sexual abuse, drug trafficking, and financial fraud. A recent memo from the Justice Department directs its lawyers to treat denaturalization cases as a high priority. The government says it wants to ensure that only deserving individuals keep their U.S. citizenship.

Earlier, these cases were rare, but now the DOJ wants to increase such actions, especially against people who may pose a threat to national security or public safety. One such case already happened where a man was stripped of his U.S. citizenship after hiding his past criminal record.

Legal experts are worried that this policy could be used unfairly. Some say the rules are too vague and could lead to innocent people losing their citizenship. Others fear it may discourage immigrants from applying for citizenship due to fear of future legal trouble. Critics also point out that people in these civil cases don’t get a free lawyer, making it harder to defend themselves.

This move could impact millions of naturalized U.S. citizens if not applied carefully. This is going to be the case with the immigration policies starting from now as the Donald Trump administration is going particularly hard against the immigration population.
