The Trump administration is significantly stepping up its efforts to strip U.S. citizenship from naturalized Americans who were born abroad, expanding what has already been a sharp crackdown on immigration.
Under new internal guidance, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) field offices have been told to identify between 100 and 200 denaturalization cases per month for referral to the Department of Justice in the 2026 fiscal year. This marks a dramatic escalation compared with recent years, when denaturalization actions were rare and only a few cases were pursued annually.
Denaturalization is the legal process by which citizenship can be revoked, typically only in cases where someone is found to have obtained citizenship through fraud, concealment of facts, or intentional misrepresentation.
However, critics warn that setting numerical goals could turn what used to be an exceptional enforcement tool into a broader policy that creates fear among millions of naturalized Americans. Officials argue the expansion is meant to restore integrity to the immigration system and focus on serious cases of fraud.
Supporters of the plan view it as a way to crack down on illegal immigration and uphold the rule of law, while civil liberties advocates say it risks undermining trust in the naturalization process and harming long-settled citizens.
