President Donald Trump announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran on Tuesday, suspending military strikes after last-minute diplomatic intervention by Pakistan.
The announcement came roughly 90 minutes before Trump’s self-imposed 8 pm deadline, after which he had threatened massive attacks on Iranian infrastructure.
Trump posted on Truth Social that he agreed to halt bombing operations following conversations with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, Pakistan’s army chief.
The ceasefire is conditioned on Iran fully reopening the Strait of Hormuz, the critical waterway through which approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes. Trump said the United States had already met and exceeded its military objectives and described the pause as a “double-sided ceasefire.”
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed Tehran’s acceptance, stating that Iran’s armed forces would cease defensive operations if US strikes were halted.
He added that safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz would be permitted over the two-week period under coordination with Iran’s military. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council also formally accepted the truce.
Trump said Iran had submitted a 10-point proposal which he described as a workable basis for negotiation, adding that almost all longstanding points of contention between the two countries had been resolved.
The two sides are expected to hold direct peace talks in Islamabad on April 10, with Vice President JD Vance reportedly set to lead the US delegation. A US Defense official confirmed all American strikes have been suspended with immediate effect.
