New OPT Program In USA: More Trouble For Indians?
The OPT program currently enables students to work for up to one year, with STEM graduates allowed an additional two years of extension.
By: Tupaki Desk | 12 Nov 2025 7:11 PM ISTThe United States government led by its president Donald Trump has been doing everything in their power to suffocate the immigration population.
The Trump administration is reportedly considering introducing new regulations to restrict the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program, which allows international students, particularly those from India and China, to work in the United States after completing their academic studies.
The OPT program currently enables students to work for up to one year, with STEM graduates allowed an additional two years of extension.
However, the proposed changes aim to tighten eligibility, reduce the duration of stay, and increase oversight on employers hiring OPT students.
Officials claim the move is intended to protect American workers and prevent misuse of the program. They argue that some companies exploit OPT by hiring foreign graduates at lower wages instead of U.S. citizens.
Critics, however, say that such a decision could discourage international talent from pursuing education in American universities and harm the country’s global competitiveness.
The proposal, if implemented, would affect hundreds of thousands of students currently on OPT, many of whom contribute significantly to the U.S. tech industry.
Universities and industry leaders have expressed concern that the restrictions could reduce innovation and create uncertainty among foreign students planning to study in the U.S. The plan is still under review and awaits formal approval.
