Get Ready: Trump Govt Making Citizenship Test Harder?
Right now, people need to answer 6 out of 10 questions correctly. The new plan may bring back the older, tougher version of the test from 2020.
By: Tupaki Desk | 26 July 2025 8:33 PM ISTDonald Trump administration in the United States is now taking significant decisions with regard to the implementation of the citizenship programmes. It was already announced that the birth citizenship class has been terminated and now address the discussion about the citizenship test.
The U.S. government is planning to make the citizenship test harder. USCIS Director Joseph Edlow said the current test is too easy and people are passing it by just memorizing answers. The new plan wants applicants to show a deeper understanding of U.S. civics, history, and government.
Right now, people need to answer 6 out of 10 questions correctly. The new plan may bring back the older, tougher version of the test from 2020. That test had 20 questions, and applicants had to get 12 right to pass. This change is aimed at checking real knowledge and better English skills.
The process is still at the proposal stage. Before any change is final, there will be a public comment period. This allows people to give their opinions. The final decision could take months.
In the past, a similar harder test was introduced, but it was later removed in 2021 by the Biden administration. Advocates worry this new test could be harder for people with less education or weaker English skills. If approved, the new test rules will not apply immediately and USCIS will give full details before starting it.
