The UK Government is reportedly working with Canada and Australia on discussions that could lead to a coordinated ban on X, according to a report by The Telegraph. The move is linked to growing concerns over harmful content on the platform, particularly related to artificial intelligence features and content moderation failures. UK officials are said to be examining whether X is complying with domestic online safety laws, with regulators being asked to explore all available enforcement options.
These include heavy fines, service restrictions, or in the most extreme case, a full ban if the platform is found to be in serious breach. The idea behind working with allied countries is to avoid isolated action and instead apply collective pressure that would be harder for the company to ignore. While the Telegraph report suggests talks are underway, there is no official confirmation that a final decision has been taken or that all three countries have agreed on a joint ban. Canada and Australia have so far expressed concerns similar to those raised in the UK, especially around user safety, misinformation, and the misuse of AI tools.
Elon Musk has responded strongly to the reports, accusing governments of attempting to suppress free speech. The situation is still evolving, but it highlights a growing global push by governments to hold major social media platforms accountable under stricter digital safety laws.
