By: Tupaki Desk | 25 April 2025 6:51 PM ISTIt is already known that the Donald Trump administration in the United States is going extremely hard on the Visa policies and also regulations in the country. They are taking strong measures to assess the situation and curb the issuance of fresh visas for newly applying individuals.
In this context, the kind of situation that is being observed in the United States is now having a snowball effect on the United Kingdom as well
In a major shift driven by stricter immigration policies, the UK has witnessed a sharp 37% drop in visa applications across key categories in the year ending March 2025. According to official British government data, just 772,200 people applied for UK visas during this period, compared to nearly 1.24 million in the previous year.
The decline is most notable in student and skilled worker visa categories. Indian students, who have traditionally formed a significant portion of the international student population in the UK, are now looking elsewhere due to rising tuition costs and policy changes restricting family members from accompanying them. The government’s move in 2024 to limit dependents for international students and tighten work visa norms appears to have had a strong deterrent effect.
Shockingly, Health and care worker visa applications also dropped significantly, reflecting the broader impact of the UK’s new immigration strategy aimed at curbing net migration. These developments are likely to have long-term effects on UK universities, businesses, and healthcare systems, all of which have heavily relied on international talent.
Experts warn that while these policies may meet short-term political goals, they risk damaging the UK’s global appeal as a destination for education and skilled employment.
