By: Tupaki Desk | 21 Nov 2025 12:29 PM ISTAfter the United States started to crack down on the immigration population, almost every other country, including the United Kingdom have started to come down heavily on the same.
It has now reached a point where the United Kingdom has largely cut down the immigration issuance policies. The latest news is that the permanent visa to the United Kingdom can take up to 10 years in waiting period.
The path to permanent residence in the United Kingdom generally takes 10 years for applicants who follow the long residence route. This policy is designed for people who have legally lived in the UK for a continuous decade under various visas.
Many migrants use this option when they do not qualify for faster settlement categories such as skilled worker visas, family visas, or asylum routes. The ten year track requires the applicant to maintain lawful residence throughout the entire period without major gaps or violations of immigration rules. Any long overstay or illegal stay can reset the clock.
Once a person completes ten years of continuous lawful residence, they can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain, which grants the right to live and work in the UK without further visa renewals.
Applicants must also meet English language requirements, pass the Life in the UK test, and show good character. After receiving permanent residence, individuals can later apply for citizenship if they meet the stay requirements and other conditions.
Many international students, skilled workers, and dependents rely on this ten year route because it provides a stable path to settlement even if their visa types change over time.
