Skipping Classes in the US May Cost Students Their Visas

If students skip classes, drop out of college, or leave their course without proper notice, they risk losing their visa immediately. This could also hurt their chances of getting any future US visa.
According to the US Department of State, over 268,000 Indian students were studying in American colleges and universities in 2023. Many of them aim to work in the US after graduation through the OPT (Optional Practical Training) and STEM OPT programs. These allow students to stay and work in the US for some time after completing their degrees. However, breaking visa rules like not attending classes or taking long leaves without permission can lead to deportation and cancel future work visas such as H-1B or even green card applications.
Earlier this month, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) also reminded students on OPT that they must report their job within 90 days. If not, their SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) status may be cancelled.
Some colleges in the US have also advised international students not to travel outside the country during this time, as doing so might lead to visa cancellation due to the strict immigration policies.
What Student Visa Holders Must Do:
1.Stay enrolled in a full course each term.
2.Attend classes regularly and maintain good academic performance.
3.Inform their university and immigration authorities about any program changes.
4.Avoid working without proper authorization.
Financial Risks of Breaking Visa Rules:
1. Loss of tuition and other fees already paid.
2.Cancelled internships or campus jobs.
3. No refund or transfer to other universities.
4.Denied visas in the future for work, travel, or family migration.
International students must take their visa responsibilities seriously. Following the rules is not just about academics it's also about securing your future in the US.
