United States immigration authorities have become very consolidated with regard to their policies regarding international travel and the repercussions are being felt by the Indian community.

The latest modification is with regard to the duration of stay, that is a standard process of the United States visa policy. This could seriously affect the Indian student community in the United States.

The White House has cleared a new DHS rule that could replace the current open-ended F-1 Duration of Status (D/S) system with fixed admission periods for international students.

The rule has completed White House review but has not yet been publicly released. If implemented, students may be required to renew or extend their status with the Department of Homeland Security if their studies go beyond the period initially granted.

In accordance with this, the USCIS recently announced that anyone pursuing adjustment of status would face new scrutiny and possibly have to leave the country to get legal status with their spouse.

The White House has cleared a rule to cut duration of status with a 2-4 year limit on foreign students so they can no longer be forever students.

The rule affects F-1, J-1 and I visas, work, study, media and journalism which would close a long-term legal migration loophole.
