Something rather strange and unexpected has happened now as the United States has issued permission to India for procurement of oil from Russia. And this has not gone well with the social media folk as they question the need for the same.

A fresh debate has erupted on social media after the United States announced a temporary waiver allowing Indian refiners to purchase Russian oil for the next 30 days. The announcement, made under the administration of Donald Trump, stated that the waiver was issued to ensure oil continues to flow into the global market and to prevent disruptions in energy supply.

According to the statement, the short term waiver permits transactions only for Russian oil shipments that are already stranded at sea. Officials from the US Treasury Department clarified that the move is designed as a limited and temporary measure and will not bring major financial benefits to Russia.

At the same time, the US indicated that it expects India to increase purchases of American crude oil in the near future. However, the development has triggered strong reactions across social media platforms in India. Many users questioned why India should require permission from another country to buy oil from Russia, arguing that energy purchases should be based purely on national interest and market needs.

Some people also raised concerns about global power politics influencing India’s energy decisions. Others pointed out that India has maintained a balanced foreign policy by continuing energy trade with multiple countries, including Russia and the United States, especially after the disruptions caused by the Russia-Ukraine War.
