Trump Green Card Madness: 1.2 Million Indians In Danger?
From now on, employees and students on temporary visas must apply for green cards only through consulates in their home countries.
By: Tupaki Desk | 23 May 2026 6:21 PM ISTThe United States Auth authorities had already been facing complaints for increased backlogs in green card processing, and now something significant has happened with regard to the policies.
From now on, employees and students on temporary visas must apply for green cards only through consulates in their home countries. No longer will there be an option to apply from within the United States. This is a bad piece of information to the 1.200,000 people of Indian origin who had applied for green card in the United States.
Another astonishing aspect is that allowing green card processing while staying in America
is being described by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services as an administrative courtesy. This is allowed only under extraordinary circumstances, while the rest will have to travel back to India before applying for green card.
Now there is a counter argument that is happening on India’s behalf. Experts from India, along with many countries around the world, have played a pivotal role in building America's tech sector especially Silicon Valley over decades by paying hefty taxes, respecting the law, and contributing immensely.
However, the reward they receive for all this is zero. The Trump administration views all these individuals, who toil for America's progress, merely as temporary workers to be used as needed.
Seeing people who have lived there for so many years being forced, for the sake of a single small process, to travel back to their home countries and redo the paperwork it becomes clear just how harsh this system has become, a seasoned expert on this matter commented.
