By: Tupaki Desk | 24 May 2026 6:00 PM ISTIt is already known that the United States authorities have started to crack down on the green card application programme in the country. Things are not looking very promising for the Indian population or any other international population for that matter.
A new update on a major U.S. immigration policy change says that many immigrants currently in the country on temporary visas including students, H-1B workers, tourists, and other nonimmigrant categories would now be required to leave the United States in order to apply for a green card.
The policy is described as affecting an estimated 780,000+ people, with limited exceptions such as extraordinary circumstances, certain dual-intent visas, and specific eligible categories, while immediate relatives of U.S. citizens may still qualify for in-country processes.
This is particularly detrimental for the Indian community, considering that they have been in the United States for many decades and are still now required to travel back to India while applying for green card.
Clarifying Washington's stand on the new immigration rules, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the policy requiring many legal immigrants to leave the United States and apply for green cards from abroad is not targeted at India, but forms part of a wider global immigration reform initiative.
Considering the current system, literally anything and happened when the larger portion of the Indian population travels to India before applying for green card. There is a chance that they might be even stopped at the airport upon arrival, citing one restriction or another.
