Thousands of Indian students and IT professionals travel to America every year for better education, high salaries and career growth. However the situation is becoming difficult for Indians as the US government introduces stricter rules for foreign workers.
The latest decision by the US government has created fresh concerns for Indian IT professionals. Several major technology companies including Cognizant, Infosys, Tata, Wipro and HCL have reportedly been suspended from a programme used by employers to sponsor green cards for foreign workers. Microsoft, Adobe and Capgemini are also among the companies affected by the decision.
This can make the process of getting permanent residency more difficult for eligible employees of these companies. It does not mean that all Indians working in America must leave the country. However it creates uncertainty for professionals who are planning to settle there with their families.
The US government says its main aim is to protect American jobs and prevent companies from using foreign workers to reduce employment opportunities for local people. US officials have also criticised the use of H-1B visas by major companies.
For Indian professionals this situation raises several questions. Many people spend lakhs of rupees on education, examinations and visa applications before moving to America. Some take education loans and depend on future salaries to repay them. If job opportunities become limited or immigration rules change suddenly their plans could face serious problems.
The situation is also worrying for Indian students who are preparing to study in America. They may now need to think carefully about education costs, job opportunities and long-term career plans before making a decision.
But should Indians completely avoid the US? The answer is not necessarily yes. America continues to offer opportunities in technology, research, healthcare and other fields. The right decision depends on a person's qualifications, financial position and career goals.
At the same time Indians should not depend entirely on America for their future. India is also growing in technology, research and business. Professionals can explore opportunities at home and in other countries.
The important lesson is to avoid making decisions based only on high salaries. Before moving abroad Indians should understand the latest visa rules, employment conditions and possible risks.
Even people who are in U.S now are facing many issues. So if Indian students even without trying a job in India dreaming to go for America can be really difficult from now and it's better to think twice about it.
