A shocking new statistic has revealed the deepening housing affordability crisis in the United States. According to recent data, nearly 75 percent of homes currently listed for sale are beyond the financial reach of an average American household. This highlights how difficult it has become for middle income families to achieve the long held dream of owning a home.
The main reason behind this situation is the widening gap between home prices and household incomes. While the median household income in the US remains far lower, the income required to comfortably afford a median priced home has risen sharply.
High mortgage interest rates have further increased monthly payments, making even moderately priced homes unaffordable for many buyers. As a result, only a small portion of homes on the market fit within the budget of typical earners.
Another major factor is the severe shortage of housing supply. Years of under construction, rising land costs and regulatory challenges have limited the number of new homes entering the market. This imbalance has pushed prices higher and strengthened the position of sellers.
Experts warn that unless wages rise significantly or housing supply improves, affordability will continue to worsen. For many Americans, home ownership is slowly shifting from a basic goal to a distant luxury.
