Donald Trump administration in the United States has come with its own set of regulations on the issuance of new student visa, and the same can be understood from the fact that certain restrictions were placed on new visas these days.

Coming to the topic now, the U.S. government has resumed issuing student visas (F, M, and J categories) after a temporary halt in May. As part of this process, they have now made social media screening mandatory for all applicants.

According to a new directive sent to all embassies and consulates, visa officers will thoroughly check the social media activity of students. This includes platforms like X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram.

Applicants must keep their social media profiles public during the visa process. Officers will review posts, comments, likes, and overall online behavior. They will be searching for any content that shows anti-American sentiment, extremist views, support for terrorist groups like Hamas, or antisemitic remarks. Even a simple like or share of problematic content may raise concerns.

If an applicant refuses to allow access to their social media accounts or restricts privacy settings, it may be considered as hiding something.

This can lead to delays or even visa rejection. In addition to social media, officials may also check search engine results, personal websites, and online forums to fully evaluate the applicant’s background and intentions.
