Volume of the Indian student population travelling into the United States for higher studies has been going up every single year. But with the onset of the Trump government, it appears that the trend is likely to go down due to the extreme measures that are being taken. Now data have a look at the deep perceptions of taking loans, just to travel to the United States for studies.

A middle class businessman from India is facing severe financial distress after sending both his children to the United States for higher education, highlighting the growing crisis confronting thousands of Indian families investing heavily in overseas studies.

Despite limited financial capacity, the parent managed to send his two children for MS degrees. By the time their education was completed, the family’s education loan had already reached ₹1.5 crore. One child completed the course two years ago, while the other graduated this year. Both failed to get selected in the H1B visa lottery despite repeated attempts, leaving them stuck in an uncertain job market.

To support them, the father initially sent ₹1 lakh per month to supplement their part time income. Following stricter enforcement after Donald Trump’s return to power, the students quit their part time jobs, forcing the father to double the monthly support to ₹2 lakhs. As a result, the total loan burden crossed ₹2 crore.

With his own business struggling, the father is now prepared to sell his flat to reduce liabilities. Relief came only recently when the elder child finally got picked in the visa lottery and secured a full time job, though the salary remains modest.

Experts say this is no isolated case. Tens of thousands of Indian students and parents are facing similar pressure, caught between shrinking entry level opportunities in the US and mounting debt back home. While parents often reassure their children, the emotional and financial strain continues to grow, making affordability a crucial question for families planning overseas education.
