The US Supreme Court has made a decisive move by dismissing the emergency petition from Tahawwur Rana, who is convicted for his involvement in the Mumbai terror attacks, against his extradition to India. This petition, which Rana filed, citing concerns of potential torture in India, was one among the several legal avenues he pursued in an attempt to avoid extradition. Rana, a Canadian national of Pakistani descent, is currently incarcerated in a Los Angeles prison. Over the years, India has been actively seeking his return to face charges related to the 26/11 attacks.

Rana had taken his case to various federal courts in the United States, all of which turned down his appeals. His efforts included a writ petition to the US Supreme Court on November 13, 2020, following his unsuccessful appeal in the US Court of Appeals in San Francisco. The US government responded to his Supreme Court writ with a 20-page affidavit, advocating for the petition’s dismissal. The Supreme Court’s decision to reject Rana’s plea clears a significant hurdle for his extradition process, marking a critical step forward in India's long-standing efforts to bring him to justice.

The push for Rana’s extradition gained notable attention during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the US, where then-President Trump highlighted the US's intention to extradite "the most dangerous person accused of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack" to India. Trump's statements hinted at a broader initiative to extradite criminals to India, suggesting that Rana's transfer could occur within the forthcoming months. This development reflects the ongoing cooperation between the US and India in combating terrorism and underscores the importance of international collaboration in ensuring justice for the victims of the Mumbai attacks.

Rana's connection to the 26/11 attacks extends to his association with David Coleman Headley, identified as a principal architect of the attacks. Reports indicate that Rana assisted Headley, who had conducted reconnaissance missions in Mumbai prior to the attacks, by leveraging his travel agency as a cover for their activities. Their collaboration played a pivotal role in planning the terrorist attacks, leading to charges of terrorism and conspiracy against both individuals. Rana's arrest by FBI officers in Chicago came about a year after the tragic events in Mumbai, marking the beginning of a protracted legal battle that has culminated in the recent Supreme Court decision.
