But even in this complex situation, it is being established that US companies have prioritised hiring Indian workers.
Top US technology companies, including Meta, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, Netflix, and Google, have significantly expanded their workforce in India over the last five years. Headcount across these companies in India has nearly doubled, rising from 104,000 in 2020 to 212,000 in 2025.
Industry experts attribute this surge to India’s talent pool and cost efficiency. While the average annual cost of a software engineer in the US is around $280,000, the same role in India including the use of AI-assisted tools comes to roughly $52,000.
This stark difference allows companies to scale operations, invest in innovation, and manage costs effectively. The trend reflects a broader global shift in tech hiring, where multinationals leverage India as a strategic hub for engineering, AI, and product development. Analysts note that combining India’s large engineering workforce with AI tools enables these firms to achieve higher productivity at a fraction of US costs.
This growth also underscores India’s emergence as a key destination for global technology investment, attracting not just software development roles but strategic positions in cloud computing, AI, and data science.
