The President of United States, Donald Trump and his administration has been modifying the visa restrictions and regulations at will. They are back at it again, as they have imposed a new restriction in the visa issuance policy that is followed by the United States.

The United States has announced new rules for people applying for short-term visas like tourist (B1/B2) or student visas.

Until now, many Indians used to apply for visas in other countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, or Germany to avoid the long waiting time in India. But from September 8, 2025, this option is no longer available.

According to the new rule, applicants must now apply only in their own country or in the country where they legally live. For Indian citizens, this means they have to attend visa interviews only in India.

The U.S. said this change is to maintain proper process and security. Only in rare cases, where the U.S. embassy or consulate does not handle non-immigrant visas, will people be allowed to apply elsewhere.

This decision is expected to increase waiting times in India, where thousands of students, tourists, and business travelers already face delays. The rule also ends some flexibilities introduced during the pandemic, such as interview waivers. Now, most applicants will need to attend in-person interviews.

Experts say this may cause difficulties for Indian students and visitors, as the backlog will grow. Applicants are advised to plan early and follow embassy updates.
