By: Tupaki Desk | 26 March 2026 7:14 PM ISTThe volume of the Indian population travelling to the United States is shooting up consistently, but there is a downward reject now due to the new restrictions in place. In the meanwhile, we have a new discussion about the social vetting that’s becoming a discussion now.
The U.S. Department of State is set to widen its visa screening process by extending social media checks to more non immigrant visa categories from March 30, 2026.
Under this expanded measure, consular officers will review an applicant’s social media activity and overall online presence as part of routine background verification before granting a visa.
Earlier, such checks were mainly limited to student visas, exchange visitor visas, and certain work related visas. With the new rule, the review will now apply to a broader range of applicants.
This includes visitor visas, fiancé visas, trainee categories, some dependent visas, cultural exchange programs, and a few humanitarian or temporary stay categories. Applicants under these classifications can expect their digital footprint to be examined during the visa process.
The move is aimed at strengthening national security and ensuring that applicants meet eligibility standards. However, this step may also increase scrutiny and could slightly extend visa processing times. In some cases, applicants may be asked to keep their social media accounts accessible for review.
While the policy change applies globally, its impact will vary depending on the visa type and the practices followed at individual consulates.
