Another Shocker: US Reduces Work Permit Duration!
The United States has introduced a major change to its work permit system that affects thousands of immigrants.
By: Tupaki Desk | 5 Dec 2025 12:16 PM ISTIt appears that the Trump ministration in the United States is doing everything in their power to suppress the immigration working population of the country.
The United States has introduced a major change to its work permit system that affects thousands of immigrants. The validity of Employment Authorization Documents has been reduced from five years to eighteen months.
This new rule applies to refugees, asylum applicants, and several other categories of immigrants who depend on work permits while waiting for long term decisions on their status. It also covers both fresh applications and renewals that are filed from the date the rule came into effect.
In some categories, the validity may be even shorter and limited to the period of authorized stay. This includes people with Temporary Protected Status, certain parole categories, and spouses of entrepreneur parole holders.
The government says the change is meant to allow more frequent security checks and closer review of each case as part of a broader tightening of immigration procedures.
However, many immigrant communities fear the consequences. Shorter validity means more frequent renewals, more paperwork, and longer waiting periods during which jobs may be at risk.
It can increase pressure on processing centers that are already struggling with heavy backlogs. Employers also worry that the instability caused by frequent renewals may affect workforce planning. Overall, the decision has raised serious concerns about uncertainty and added stress for immigrant workers.
