The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has issued a stern warning to green card holders and visa recipients. The agency stated that individuals found guilty of serious crimes, such as supporting terrorism, will lose their permanent residency or visa privileges. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), USCIS highlighted that breaking the law could lead to revocation of these privileges.

Green cards provide lawful permanent resident status, enabling individuals to live and work in the U.S. indefinitely. The Department of Homeland Security outlines various ways to obtain one, including sponsorship by a U.S. family member or employer, refugee or asylum status, or other humanitarian programs. Currently, around 12.8 million people hold green cards in the United States.

Immigration Enforcement Efforts

The USCIS update aligns with broader efforts to curb illegal immigration during former President Donald Trump's administration. According to the Associated Press, proposed spending cuts and border security plans aim to allocate nearly $150 billion for mass deportation over four years. This plan includes funding for more detention facilities, building the southern border wall, and hiring thousands of additional immigration enforcement officers.

Living in the United States with a visa or green card is considered a privilege by the USCIS. The agency stressed that residents must respect U.S. laws and values. Violations such as promoting violence or endorsing terrorism can result in deportation for those holding green cards or visas.

Budget Allocation for Immigration

Currently, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) receives about $10 billion annually from the federal budget for immigration enforcement activities. ICE is the primary agency responsible for enforcing immigration laws in the United States.

The USCIS's recent announcement serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to U.S. laws while residing in the country on a visa or green card. The agency's message underscores its commitment to maintaining national security and upholding legal standards.
