The Tamil Nadu film industry produced many big personalities, but Vijayakanth has a special legacy. As an actor and politician, he added many feathers to his illustrious cap making him stand tall. Let us dive into the details of his political journey and his achievements in the arena.

Tamil Nadu has been politically active and the film stars venturing into politics is not new. We can cite many examples. Legendary actor MGR and Jayalalithaa entered politics and became the Chief Ministers of the Southern state. Vijayakanth also did the same.

While he could not become the Chief Minister he managed to achieve a few things. He founded the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) party in 2005 and contested the elections the next year. The party became a big player in the state in 2006 with the vote percentage it got.

What makes DMDK special is that the party claims it won't go for the donations and the expenses that are required to run the party are spent by Vijayakanth alone. The party made the rule that it won't form any alliances with anyone. However, it broke the policy and joined hands with AIADMK in 2011.

In the first elections the party contested, it managed to win just a single seat with Vijayakanth emerging victorious. Despite the lone seat, the DMDK created a sensation in the state with the vote percentage. The party made the difference between the two parties by eating into the votes.

2011 can be dubbed as the best time in politics for the party. It joined hands with AIADMK. Despite the strong cadre and presence of AIADMK, DMDK stunned everyone by winning more seats than the other party. This big win made him the Leader of the Opposition. He served as the Opposition leader for five years.

After seeing success in two elections, the party suffered a big blow in 2016. The party lost the elections and so did Vijayakanth. A few years later, DMDK sent shocking waves in the state by joining hands with the BJP for an alliance in 2019. However, the alliance could not show any impact in the Lok Sabha elections. Had the alliance shown any impact things would have been different.
