Congress Defection Promise: What About BRS MLAs Then?

The Lok Sabha elections are around the corner. The Congress party wants to defeat the BJP and this is the reason why the INDIA bloc was formed. Congress already leads UPA. But a new one was formed with new allies. The main motto of these parties is to stop BJP and Narendra Modi from winning elections again.

Ahead of the big elections, the Congress party announced the manifesto with many promises. But one promise caught everyone’s attention as Congress made a big promise about the defection and amending a schedule in the Constitution to stop this.

The grand old party said that it would amend the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution so that the defection becomes disqualification. This applies to both Assembly and Parliament members.

“We promise to amend the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution and make defection (leaving the original party on which the MLA or MP was elected) an automatic disqualification of the membership in the Assembly or Parliament,” the promise reads.

As the Congress party made the promise the focus went on to what happened in Telangana. It is known that a few leaders from BRS already joined the Congress party. MPs and MLAs already took the Congress route. The BRS party is accusing the party of poaching the MLAs in the state.

As the promise was made by the Congress, people wonder what would happen to the BRS leaders who joined the Congress party. The likes of Danam Nagender and Kadiyam Srihari joined the BRS recently and the BRS leaders are questioning how they can be allowed.

A petition was also filed with the High Court seeking the disqualification of MLA Danam Nagender as he shifted his loyalties to the Congress from the BRS. Despite this, the Congress announced the promise.

Many say that the party might have made the promise keeping what the BJP did. In a few states MLAs from Congress took the BJP route and this led to the governments getting toppled. However, the promise is making Congress face questions.
