Decade Rewind: Best Trendsetters Of Telugu Cinema In 2010s
X
Trendsetting films are not hit films or films that tend to become blockbusters. The true trendsetters are those that change an Industry's way of approach and in films, Shiva, Rojulu Marayi, Pathalabhairavi, Pedda Manushulu, Ave Kallu, Mosagallaku Mosagadu, Khaidi, Chali Chemmalu, Gudachari 116, Muthyala Muggu, Ladies Tailor, Anveshana, Shanthinivasam are credited as big trend changers/ trendsetters in Telugu Cinema.

In 2010's, Telugu Cinema has adapted few World film genres and even changed its Star-Centred approach to content centred approach. So let's look back at the decade and find out the best trendsetting films of all.

Dookudu (2011)

Mahesh Babu's Dookudu made Srinu Vaitla's patent comedy show kind of storytelling mixed with emotions a go-to for every director. Even though it is a better wholesome movie than Ready, Dhee and King from the maker, Dookudu success even forced Trivikram Srinivas kind of director to write movies around family subjects that give more scope to gimmicks in storytelling like using Brahmanandam or another popular comedian as centre of all the buffoonery. Attharintiki Daredi feels like a film that presented the Dookudu formula in a much better way.

Ee Rojullo (2012)

Ee Rojullo gave rise to new trend in filmmaking in Telugu Cinema. Maruthi Dasari proved that funny content will bring audiences to theatres even if we make in low budget. But he concentrated more on adult and bold jokes in this film and others crossed the line, that he tried to maintain.

Swamy Ra..Ra (2013)

Swamy Ra..Ra managed to say what Ee Rojullo said in a better way. It paved way for makers who believed in their unique concept and Bhale Manchi Roju, Brochevarevarura, Agent Sai Srinivas Athreya, Pelli Choopulu, Karthikeya, Surya vs Surya seem like an extension to the idea that Sudheer Varma landed with his first film. Taking a new concept and sticking to the genre only, became a trend in Telugu Cinema which was used to commercial subplots and references right from 1970's.

Seethamma Vakitlo Srimalle Chettu (2013)

For the first time in two decades, two star heroes decided to come together for this film. Even though it is trolled heavily and had elements that could have made it even better picture, film opened market for multi-starrers in Telugu Cinema. Venkatesh went on to act with Pawan Kalyan, Ram, Naga Chaitanya and Varun Tej after sharing screen space with Mahesh Babu in this movie.

Prema Katha Chitram (2013)

Nandita and Sudheer Babu were in desperate need for success before the release of the film. Maruthi became a brand name with this film. Everyone who wanted to make a simple horror film after Mantra success, started going for Horror comedies with Prema Katha Chitram's massive success. Again adult comedy in the film, made many think that adult comedy is the way to go forward in this genre.

Bhale Bhale Magadivoy (2015)

Nani came back after a lull period with this film and went on to deliver 7 back to back box office hits. Bhale Bhale Mogadivoy again became a trend from Maruthi after he saw some of his low budget films made him adult comedy director and he proved that he can write wholesome family entertainers with the film. Narrating the story of a protagonist with a disease or a problem, with heavy doses of comedy, became selling point in the next few years.

Baahubali (2015)

Second Baahubali film showed the success range of a well-etched plot at Pan-India level but Baahubali-1, is the biggest trendsetter in Indian Cinema. It made many filmmakers see what they are "wasting" their money on and dream big. SS Rajamouli just went grand in his imagination while created strong characters to narrate an old story in a new way.

Kshanam (2016)

Kshanam from Adivi Sesh, once again proved that budget is never an issue for audiences, if your content is acceptable. If it is well narrated, they will watch any actor and make it a huge success. Kshanam gave wings to films like RX100, Goodachari, Evaru.

Arjun Reddy (2017)

Arjun Reddy is a cult love story for 2010's youth but it is a trendsetter for obvious reasons. It changed the way a content is publicised and said on screen. It used bold camera movements, language and edgy scenes to show emotions. Young directors started following Sandeep Reddy Vanga's style in writing and started adding bold scenes just for the sake of it. But 2020's might see better usage of the market that Arjun Reddy opened for new age filmmaking.

Mahanati (2018)

Mahanati definitely opened market for biopics in Telugu. Many actors, even the likes of Balakrishna got immense strength to go for popular actors and celebrities biopics, because of the success, of this film. It is still unfathomable on how the team believed in the film and made it a box office success.

Filmmakers who made a difference:

Boyapati Srinu as a filmmaker became a trendsetter as he brought some of his eccentric commercial elements into the foray and few filmmakers started following him.

After him, 2010's saw the rise of Koratala Siva, who managed to carve a niche for himself in commercial filmmaking. He takes the same old commercial stories but narrates them, in his own laid back style.
