Pongal season is a lucrative one in Tamil Nadu as last year, Petta starring Rajnikanth and Viswasam starring Ajith became big hits. In fact, Petta had an edge of being bigger grosser due to Overseas collections but in local markets, Viswasam became a bigger grosser.
After that, Rajnikanth's producers announced 5 months before the release that they are coming for Pongal with Darbar and producers of Viswasam wanted to release Dhanush's Pattas for same festival.
They had a discussion with Lyca Productions, producers of Darbar and decided to go for second weekend in the middle of the festival giving a week gap to Rajni's film, this time.
Rajni film was directed by AR Murugadoss and it became a safe bet project from the team as fans liked it but critics and common audience did not.
Clever budget helped the producers to recover more than 70% in the first week. Now, Pattas will not repeat Viswasam success for producers, Satyajyothi films say trade pundits.
The movie released on 16th January, 2020 did not really satisfy Dhanush fans and families won't connect to the film, say many. Let's wait and see about the long run, but for now, Pongal season helped Superstar and the same doesn't appear to be case with his son-in-law, Dhanush's film.
