Director Krish Jagarlamudi never expected that he would get the opportunity to work with Balakrishna Nandamuri very soon after his association with Balakrishna for the film Gautamiputra Satakarni in the year 2016. Right after finishing the last schedule of Kangana Ranaut's Manikarnika in Hindi, Krish was called by Balakrishna to helm the NTR biopic.

It is after the walkout of Teja that Krish was approached and Krish did not have any reason to decline the project as he felt comfortable working with the star hero and the actor also has great admiration for this star director. Recently, Krish revealed one major and the primary decision that he has taken right after stepping into the project.

Before he jumped on the project, the makers wanted to make the movie with a duration of around four hours. But, they have foreseen some real problems in executing it and the multiplexes management made it clear that they are not going to screen the movie if the film has a runtime of 4 hours. They revealed that it will be a threat to their business. After a point, the film unit also felt that there is a need to divide the movie into two parts.

Then, Krish arrived on the project and held quick discussions with his team to decide the division of content in both the parts. The advantage that Krish had with two parts is to satisfy Balakrishna by allowing him to sport the getups that he wanted and include the bit songs that he suggested.

As of now, the first part of the movie Kathanayakudu is expected to have a runtime of 2.5 hours while the second part Mahanayakudu is expected to have a runtime of 2 hours.
