Bellamkonda Ganesh made his debut with a good film like 'Swathimuthyam'. His second film 'Nenu Student Sir' is releasing today. 'Naandi' producer Satish Varma bankrolled this film while Rakhi Uppalapati is making his debut as a director. The promos looked very interesting and let us dive into the review to find out more about this movie.

Story:

Subbarao alias Subbu (Bellamkonda Ganesh) is a regular middle class youngster. He is fascinated towards iPhone as he goes to the mobile store everyday and watches the iPhone model. He plans to buy it someday but he doesn't have enough money. He doesn't pressurize his parents and gathers money with some part-time jobs. After working hard for a year, he pools up enough money to buy the iPhone. He purchases it and names it 'Buchi Babu'. He looks after it very carefully but it ends up in the hands of police due to a fight. It gets lost in the police station and Subbu goes to the commissioner (Samuthirakani) for complaining about his phone. They promise to give him another iPhone but Subbu disagrees with that. While he is on the search for his phone, he ends up in the middle of a murder case. What really happened? Did Subbu finally get his phone? These issues form the crux of the story.

Analysis:

Tamil directors are experts in exploring the crimes and social issues that greatly affect society. The storytelling in movies like 'Kanidhan' (original of 'Arjun Suravaram'), 'Tegidi' (dubbed as 'Bhadram'), 'Irumbu Thurai' (dubbed as 'Abhimanyudu') and others very gripping. All these movies deals with serious issues that affect the society without the knowledge of people. Writers and directors get inspired by the news stories in papers and channels. They can raise the curiosity of the audience if they go deep into these subjects and explore them. Writer-director Krishna Chaitanya's idea of penning a story on a crime involving unclaimed accounts is quite good. The idea alone is not enough as the screenplay should keep the viewers at the edge of their seats. But it is where 'Nenu Student Sir' gets off the track. The execution is not on par with the story and the director failed in dealing with this subject like an intense thriller.

'Nenu Student Sir' begins on an interesting note but ends on a disappointing note. The hero buys the iPhone after a lot of hard work but he loses it within a day. Half of the movie is all about the hero trying to get back his phone. The director did not execute this part in an interesting manner. Naming his phone as 'Buchibabu' and treating it like his brother and hero mouthing some way too emotional dialogues regarding 'Buchibabu' is a bit too much. Had the phone been with the hero for a year or two, he might have had some personal information in it and this helps in creating an emotional bond with the phone. But one cannot understand why the hero is so connected to the mobile which he bought a day back. The hero going above and beyond for his phone seems a bit artificial and especially wanting the same mobile despite the offer to get a new phone is astonishing.

Going directly to the commissioner for his phone and getting close to his daughter when he doesn't help him along with the love track looks way too impractical and doesn't help the story. We may think that it is a concept-based movie at the beginning but the romantic track between the hero and the heroine makes it look like a regular commercial flick. After an uninteresting love story, the interval creates a bit of interest. Hero getting tangled in a murder case makes the proceedings engaging and creates hopes on the second half. But the storytelling of the murder case is quite ordinary and the lack of thrilling scenes turns out to be a big minus. People watch the movie completely in order to find out what happened to the hero and who is the villain and other things due the interest dies down long before that. The reverse gear scenes showcasing the hero outwitting the villain are executed decently. The climax too fails to pack a punch. The artists selected to play the villain roles create comedy but there is a severe lack of intensity. Overall, 'Nenu Student Sir' is a promising idea that went wrong in the execution.

Performances:

Bellamkonda Ganesh showed a lot of improvement compared to 'Swathimuthyam'. He performed decently in this movie and he needs to be appreciated for selecting a tough subject for his second film. He appeared as a boy next door and it suited well for the movie's plotline. Heroine Avantika looks okay but she doesn't have a lot to do in the movie. Samuthirakani is not completely utilized in this movie. Despite playing the commissioner role, the versatile actor was not able to showcase his specialty in many scenes. Sunil was restricted to an extended cameo and he was decent. Srikanth Iyengar was good in his role and the rest of the actors did a fine job.

Technicians:

'Nenu Student Sir' was just okay on the technical front. Mahati Swara Sagar's music is adequate but the songs are not memorable. The movie offers zero scope for songs. His background score was passable. Anith Madhadi's cinematography is fine and the production values are not that great. The limitations in the budget are clearly visible. The right actors have not been selected for key roles. Krishna Chaitanya's story is good and has a lot of potential but the director faltered a bit with his screenplay. The movie was wrapped up in 45 days in a budget of 3 crores. So, the producers saved a lot of money and Rakhi Uppalapati needs to be appreciated for that. But he failed in writing a gripping screenplay for this flick.

Verdict: 'Nenu Student Sir' - Nice Idea But Something Missing!
