The biggest festival season for Tollywood is definitely Sankranti which is why all the big films queue up to arrive at that time. This year, we witnessed a huge box-office turn over during Pongal season thanks to Allu Arjun and Mahesh Babu. Both 'Sarileru Neekevvaru' and 'Ala Vaikunthapuramlo' became super hits and set the cash registers ringing. This year started off on a great note but everything went downhill from March.
The unexpected and unfortunate Corona pandemic pressed the pause button on the whole world. The shootings were kept on hold, the theatres were closed and everyone was forced to stay in their homes. Nearly after 7 months, the theatres are getting opened again that too with not more than 50% occupancy.
With Dusshera season coming, many people thought that some decent films will be entertaining everyone on the big screens but Tollywood decided to skip this festive season. Dusshera is the next big season for movies after Sankranti but the filmmakers are not yet confident about releasing films in theatres as they are unaware of how the audience reception would be. If people don't show up in the theatres, it may incur huge losses to the producers as well as exhibitors.
On the other hand, the theatre owners and distributors are requesting the government to allow full occupancy as it is the only way they could run the theatre business. This is the main reason why the big filmmakers are planning to arrive during Diwali and Christmas as people may get used to coming to theatres by then. Let us wait and see what happens.
