Megastar Chiranjeevi is working continuously in his second innings. He arrived with 'Acharya' during last year's summer and with 'Godfather' during the Dasara season. While one film ended up as a disaster, the other one turned out to be an average flick. Now, he has arrived during the Sankranti season with a sole purpose of scoring a super hit. His 'Waltair Veerayya' generated a positive buzz with its songs and trailer. With Ravi Teja playing a key role, there are massive expectations on this film. Story:
Solomon Caesar (Bobby Simha) is an international drug smuggler. RAW agents arrest him and were forced to keep him in Maredumilli police station due to a flight crash. But Caesar's men kill everyone and take away Caesar. Distraught by the death of his colleagues, Seethapathi (Rajendra Prasad) decides to take revenge on Caesar. They make a deal with Waltair Veerayya (Chiranjeevi) who is a kingmaker in Vizag. Veerayya and gang enter Malaysia to trap Caesar but we find out that he has other plans as well. What is that plan? Why is Veerayya searching for another person? All this forms the rest of the story.
Analysis:
Ever since the movie began, the team of 'Waltair Veerayya' have been referring to 'Poonakaalu Loading' a lot. Every poster and every promotional content had this line. Even fans cannot say that they got Poonakalu when they saw the songs or the teaser or the trailer. Those 'Poonakalu' were not seen in the movie too but there is paisa vasool entertainment guaranteed here. Bobby and his team's efforts to showcase vintage Chiru in style, comedy timing, body language and grace have been successful to some extent. Fans of Megastar will get connected to his character. While there are no 'High' moments in the film, the required fun and entertainment for a regular cinema watcher is in abundance in this film. All the commercial elements one would expect from a commercial hero is present in 'Waltair Veerayya'.
Whether it is 'Rowdy Alludu' or 'Mutha Mestri' or 'Shankar Dada MBBS', the characters are quite unique. The magic of these characters will not be repeated if the same costumes or body language is brought back. But Bobby who is a Chiru fan managed to do the same thing and mostly impressed the public. Chiru imitating himself did not work everywhere but it worked in most parts like the police station scene or the sentiment scene where he acts angry towards his brother but shows immense love towards his brother. His combination scenes with Ravi Teja are the biggest highlight of this movie.
But the way this film started does not look interesting. It looks like Bobby got confused whether to introduce Chiru in a comedic manner or a powerful way. After introducing him with 'Veerayya' BGM and giving him a lot of buildup, he goes to do comedy in the very next scene. This makes the character graph fall down instantly. Right from the first scene, we get an idea that we are going to see a routine formula film. On expects 'Veerayya' to get on track when he enters Malaysia to find the smuggler but the graph goes even down. Shruti Hassan's track and the comedy track that goes simultaneously are normal. The reveal of Shruti Hassan as undercover agent is quite hilarious but in an unintentional way. The wait of the audience is worthwhile since the interval point is quite good.
The interval bang revealing hero's real mission is one of the highlights of this movie. The flashback starts in the second half and Ravi Teja makes an entry. There will be some seriousness in the story thanks to Ravi Teja's character. The combination scenes of these two heroes come out well and the emotions are well handled. Their cat and mouse game and emotional dialogues work out amazingly. Though it is a bit long, the flashback and the comedy during this period are the major strengths. The story returns to regular mode once the flashback is done. The pre-climax and climax episodes are designed in a grand manner and Bobby managed to bring the vintage Chiru back. The comedy worked out fantastically and the heroism got elevated as well. While the story and screenplay are quite ordinary, the movie goer can watch it Chiranjeevi, comedy, Ravi Teja and their combination scenes.
Performance:
Chiranjeevi tried to bring his old vintage body language back with 'Waltair Veerayya'. His comedy timing is quite good in this film and he managed to impress his fans a lot. But there is a lack of consistency in his character. He appears serious in one scene and does comedy in another which makes the character graph go up and come down constantly. His energy and enthusiasm at this age is truly commendable. His dances in the 'Boss Party' song are a treat to watch.
Ravi Teja shines in a special role. His character runs in the correct meter throughout and he did complete justice. Shruti Hassan is just present for the name sake and her twist as RAW agent is borderline hilarious. Prakash Raj is too routine as the villain. He did hundreds of such roles in the past. Bobby Simha did a fine job and the rest of the cast like Rajendra Prasad, Catherine Tresa, Jaan Vijay, Nassar, Srinivas Reddy, Sapthagiri, Pradeep Rawat, Shakalaka Shankar and others are adequate.
Technicians:
Rockstar Devi Sri Prasad who is unable to reach the high standards that he set for himself has delivered a decent output. His title song, Boss Party and a few others look good on the screen. His background score definitely lifts the proceedings a lot. The visual from Arthur K Wilson are amazing and the production values are top notch.
There are no surprises in the screenplay written by Bobby, Kona Venkat and Chakravarthy Reddy. The movie gives you a feel that the story is not written in a proper way but fights and scenes are written for Chiru at the beginning while the story is woven around it. Bobby did a very good job as showing his love for Megastar. Though he did not bring the 'Poonakalu' as announced but he managed to keep the audience entertained.
Verdict: Not Many 'Poonakalu' But A Complete 'Paisa Vasool'!
