Mani Ratnam is one of the legendary filmmakers in Indian film history. He has been dreaming of making 'Ponniyin Selvan' for the past 30 years. Starting from Rajnikanth and Kamal Hassan, he approached many stars and wanted to take the film on floors many times. He really wanted to make this movie with Thalapathy Vijay and Mahesh Babu as the lead. With financiers backing away, this dream project with Mahesh and Vijay was shelved. Finally, Lyca Productions came forward to produce the film along with Mani Ratnam himself and the film began rolling but with a different set of actors.

Chiyaan Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai and Trisha played the lead roles. Just like 'Baahubali', Mani Ratnam planned to tell the story in two parts. 'PS - 1' came out on 30th September amidst huge hype and expectations. Ever since the release date has been announced, a few sections of the Tamil audience started calling it 'Baahubali Ka Baap'. But the movie failed to create a lot of buzz anywhere else except in Tamil Nadu.

Mani Ratnam's films usually have a good craze in the Telugu states. But his last few films disappointed the audience and 'PS - 1' too failed to generate a lot of buzz in the Telugu states. This movie which is based on the novel named 'Ponniyin Selvan' written by Kalki Krishnamurthy arrived on the announced date. People wanted to see how the team translated such a popular novel into a movie but Mani Ratnam failed to engage the common audience at any point.

The 'Roja' director failed to create the same level of excitement the book created and everyone who watched 'Ponniyin Selvan 1' can vouch for that. The novel was written in five parts but the legendary director decided to tell the story in two parts. A few claim that Mani Ratnam and team failed to do proper homework as the film feels like a story that began from the middle and ended without a finishing point.

While the plot can be outlined as the vassals revolting against the Chola kingdom and their sons trying to protect it but there is a lack of clarity in the screenplay. The film looks like a collection of scenes with no link between them. Also, the main characters like Aditya Karikala, Arunmozhi Varman and Nandini are established through dialogues and there are no scenes to establish their characters.

These larger-than-life films rely mainly on emotions and it is what the film was lacking. Barring Karthi, no character in the film makes you emotionally invested. The team ended the first part by suggesting that the second part is on its way. But people are wondering if the makers are ready to make the second part, especially with the reception the first part got. Let us wait and see what happens.
