Despite not having big actors or noted technicians, 'Baby' is one of those rare films that garnered a lot of interest through its promotional content. The youthful love story generated a good buzz with its songs and trailer. Sai Rajesh who was a part of making a few successful films has directed it. Produced under the wing of 'Geetha Arts' banner, let us see how the film turned out.
Story:
Vaishnavi (Vaishnavi Chaitanya) falls in love with her classmate Anand (Anand Deverakonda) during her school days. At first, Anand doesn't look at her but the love she showed for him makes Anand fall for Vaishnavi as well. Anand fails the 10th standard and becomes an auto driver while Vaishnavi completes intermediate and joins an engineering college. She steps into college thinking that she might lose Anand and is sad about it. But she soon changes according to the circumstances. She completely changes her look and she gets attracted towards Viraj (Viraj Ashwin). Vexed with her behavior Anand acts with her in a rash manner which makes Vaishnavi closer to Viraj. Where does this triangular love story? What turns will their lives take? Answers to these form the rest of the story.
Analysis:
Times are changing, generations keep changing and trends change too. But love stories are the evergreen formula for success on the silver screen if done in the proper way. But not all love stories are the same. They keep changing according to the time and it stems from the mindset of the youth these days. It depends on how the girls and guys are in the present society, how they perceive love, marriage and sex. The conversations, situations and characters have to be relatable in love stories which will make the audience feel the emotions well. This is the success mantra of love stories and 'Baby' has all these qualities in abundance. We can't say that there is no pure love in today's generation and generalize everything but 'Baby' sheds light on how love which starts at an immature age turns out as the days progress. This a teen love story that goes on till the youth stage and connects with everyone.
A few years back, a small film like 'RX100' created a sensation at the box office. It is a very regular film but the youth went crazy over it. It is mainly because of the heroine's character as she plays the life of the hero. This connected well with the youth. The scene where Rao Ramesh lashes out at the heroine character got a huge applause in theatres. This mirrors the rage boys have towards girls who make them fall in love and leave them halfway. Sai Rajesh did a similar thing with his 'Baby' too as it deals with the story of a girl who falls for a boy at a very young age but gets attracted to another guy in the middle and goes back to the first boy. It takes guts to narrate a story about a character who runs love tracks with two persons at the same time. But Sai Rajesh showcased that there are such girls in the present times. This is the biggest selling point of 'Baby'.
The movie is nearly three hours long and it revolves around three main characters. Every scene in the film involves in of those three characters and most of the scenes are conversations between any two of those characters. Though these scenes offer nothing new and remind us of many other film scenes, the roles and the scenes are quite trendy. The conversations are natural and interesting without any dramatization. This will make the youth get connected to this film. On top of that, all three actors who played the lead roles did extremely well. The director showed how the girl who fell in love with her school friend but changes according to the circumstances after going to college in the first half of the movie. The scene where he showcases the double standard nature of the heroine before the interval is a highlight.
The second half goes on without any path in the beginning and the confusion in the heroine's role might trouble you but the screenplay keeps going forward. It feels like the girl never truly loves her first lover completely. At the same time, her relationship with the second boy too doesn't convince you. The confusion part keeps bothering the viewer and it is not dealt with convincingly. But the film takes a turn in the last 40 minutes. The director showed his capability in the scene where the two boys meet for the first time. The public gets completely invested in the proceedings.
The movie runs in the same tempo from then till the end. Though the climax is not as expected, the film creates a very good impression. It may not cater to the family audience but 'Baby' will definitely connect with the youth. The young boys will definitely queue up to watch this flick. But you need to keep your 'levels' a bit down while watching this movie. If not you feel out of place and disconnected.
Performances:
Anand Deverakonda did not heavily impress with his acting skills in any of his films till date. Many thought that he is making use of his brother's craze to grab opportunities. But that opinion changes after you watch 'Baby' as he delivers an outstanding performance. He wins everyone's hearts with this movie and he lived the character of Anand. He owned the role and makes us go through every emotion he feels in the film. We can see the 'performer' in him and his intensity is shown in this character.
Vaishnavi Chaitanya who became a heroine after making some content in YouTube has utilised the opportunity she got. She gave 'The Best Performance' in her debut film as a heroine. She has a good range of expressions and performed well in the emotional scenes as well. She needs to be appreciated for showing a lot of variations in this film. Her bold acts impress you as well. Viraj Ashwin did complete justice to his role and did decently in every scene. Nagababu makes his presence felt in the short time he appears. Harsha and the guy who acts as the hero's friend along with the mother character have performed quite well too.
Technicians:
'Baby' got huge support from the technical team. We can see how music is very crucial for a love story as Vijay Bulganin's songs and background scores are a special highlight of this flick. The songs are picturized well too. They take the story forward which is amazing to see. Bal Reddy's camerawork is highly impressive. We do not get a feeling that it is a small film. The production values are very good as the quality can be seen onscreen. Writer-director Sai Rajesh knows the mindset of the current generation of youth. He seems to have penned this story out of the things he heard and faced personally as they are very natural. The dialogues are seamless and the proceedings happen at a decent pace. Had he made the conflict point a bit stronger, the movie would have been even more impactful and crisper.
Verdict - 'Baby' Pierces Through Your Heart!
