'Nayattu' is a Malayalam film that became highly successful in Kerala two years back. Director Teja Marni and his team made suitable changes to suit the Telugu nativity and remade the film as 'Kota Bommali PS'. Featuring Srikanth, Rahul Vijay, Shivani Rajasekhar and others in the lead roles, 'GA2 Pictures' bankrolled this movie. With decent expectations, the film has arrived in theatres and let us find out how it is.
Story:
Ramakrishna (Srikanth) is a head constable at a police station in Tekkali constituency of Srikakulam district. He has a very good reputation has he worked in Grew Hounds for 20 years and took part in many encounters. Ravi (Rahul Vijay) and Kumari (Shiva Rajasekhar) are constables in the same station. Byelections arrive in Tekkali and Home Minister competes to win the seat which makes things very interesting. At the same time, Ravi, Ramakrishna and Kumari become accused in an accident case. With this case blowing out of proportion, it garners a lot of attention and even affects the elections. With the three of them realizing that they are being scapegoated, they escape from the police and run for their lives. The rest of the story revolves around the police chasing them and the audience witnessing a lot of twists and turns in the movie.
Analysis:
Both audience and industry folks are getting terrified when they talk about remakes. These days, remakes of very good movies are unable to become successful. With OTT giving us content from all languages, people are already watching originals and impressing them with remakes has become a tough task. They are either calling it a Xerox copy or claiming that it spoiled the original if changes are made. At the same time, getting a good response from people who didn't watch the original is also not an easy task. Only a few films manage to impress people who watched the original and didn't watch it. 'Kota Bommali PS' belongs to that category. Keeping aside the fact that it is a remake, 'Kota Bommali PS' is a film that will touch hearts. It shocks the audiences, makes you think and leaves you with contentment. It keeps you hooked for more than two hours and even haunts you after walking out of the theatres.
'Kota Bommali PS' poses a lot of questions about the system which is trapped in the hands of politicians. It showcased how the police became spawns in the hands of leaders. We get to see how policemen who are very honest get sacrificed in the powerplay of politicians. This is the main point of this movie and we get impressed by how the core story is written based on small situations. The makers showed how politicians play games during the time of elections and mirrors the state of the current society. There are intro scenes, establishments or elevations for lead characters in this movie. All of them are shown in a very ordinary fashion right at the beginning. The director made sure that the story takes the front seat and he takes the movie forward with interesting scenes. The twists grab your attention and the sequence of events are showed in a superb manner. The pace becomes even quicker after these turn of events.
We feel that it is quite easy for police people to escape an accident case. But three police personnel get trapped in it and the reasoning is convincing. Also, we think that police people from the entire district can easily find three people who escape but they find it difficult. This is also shown very convincingly. The director succeeded in bettering some scenes compared to the original. The game of chess between police people and hero is very engaging. At no point does the film feel boring. The pre-climax and climax episodes take the film to another level. There is a key turn in this film just like the original. You need to see what the hero does against the injustice happening towards them. This scene is very heartbreaking.
In Malayalam, the film raises a lot of questions and makes you feel sad at the end. While the Telugu version brings a lot of tears during the pre-climax, you get a hopeful ending here. Though there might be mixed opinions regarding this change, it is done according to the taste of Telugu audience. Murali Sharma's dialogues about the system is a good addition. The tone of characters and the dialogues sound different in this film when compared with the original. The movie is a bit commercialised as Srikanth gets some kind of heroic elevation as well. Taking the soul of 'Nayattu', the makers made 'Kota Bommali PS' according to the Telugu nativity. With the film being completely serious, there are doubts regarding the film's reach but keeping the business aside, 'Kota Bommali PS' is a very good film without a doubt.
Performances:
Srikanth's acting and his role are the biggest strengths of 'Kota Bommali PS'. He carried the film on his shoulders. He acted in a very mature manner, especially during the conflict scenes. He delivered what is required for such a character. The good writing was backed by able acting which worked wonders. He will make you tear up by the end of the movie. Rahul Vijay suited the role of Ravi who joined the duty recently. Shivani Rajasekhar suited the role of an ordinary girl perfectly. Her screen presence and acting are just okay. Murali Sharma as the politician was wonderful. He brought a uniqueness to the character with his expressions and typical dialogue delivery. Varalaxmi Sarathkumar as Raziya Ali did very well. The rest of them are decent.
Technicians:
Ranjin Raj's music elevated the scenes a lot. The Malayalam composer's work brought a lot of drama and thrill into the movie. He played a main role in involving the audience in the proceedings. Mithun Mukundan's Lingidi Lingidi looked good on the screen. Jagadeesh Cheekati's visuals are quite natural and his lighting is amazing. The production values are quite good. They delivered quality content within a limited budget. Nagendra Kasi's dialogues worked out well. Murali Sharma's dialogues on the system were quite deep. Director Teja Marni did not spoil the original but managed to take the soul and narrated it according to the Telugu audience's taste. There might be mixed opinions on changes but he did good in many parts. He showed his talent with 'Kota Bommali PS'.
Verdict: 'Kota Bommali PS' – Strong & Heart Touching!
