Kalyan Ram learnt enough from the failure of 'OM' which wasa result of his 3 years hard work. Since then, He decided to pick up scripts which were out & out entertainers. 'Patas' fetched him the success he always wanted and now he does 'Sher' in the same genre. Mallikarjun, earlier, directed 'Kaththi' but couldn't achieve the positive outcome and he is back again with 'Sher'. What's going to be the fate of this commercial entertainer which is carrying poor pre-release buzz?
Synopsis:
Gautham (Kalyan Ram) loves his family very much and won't hesitate to go to any extent for them. He disrupts the wedding of Puppy (Vikramjeeth) for the sake of his friend and eventually becomes his arch-rival. It's then Puppy challenges Gautham that he would marry the girl who comes into his life. On fine day, Gautham falls in love with Nandini (Sonal Chauhan) and Puppy kidnaps her to seek revenge. Gautham begins eliminating one after the other in Puppy's Gang but all this isn't just for the sake of Nandini. What's the hidden motive of Gautham? Do watch 'Sher' in theaters near you for knowing it!
Performances:
Kalyan Ram appears much more confident in 'Sher', that's because of 'Patas' success. Its a cake walk for him to do the role of Gautham which hardly tests his potential as an actor. He did perform well in Dances and Fights.
Sonal Chauhan has got very little to act but scores brownie points with her bubbliness & glamour show.
Rao Ramesh and Rohini does a fine job. Vikramjeeth is ineffective as a Villian. Mukesh Rushi doesn't leave a good impression. Brahmanandam was wasted. Ali is alright. MS Narayana's Lungi Baba act failed to generate laughs. Pruthvi entertains with his trademark comic timing.
Pros:
Pruthvi's Punchlines
Run Time (118 Min)
Cons:
Story
Screenplay
Direction
Technicalities:
Nothing special about SS Thaman's Music and even he would accept it. Cinematography by Sarvesh Murari is okay. Diamond Rathnababu's Dialogues worked in parts. Its better to remember Mallikarjun as the Director of 'Kaththi' instead of 'Sher'. He fails to leave a mark of his own inspite of getting a second opportunity. Production Values are just acceptable and the quality we find in NTR Arts films is missing.
Analysis:
Audience ignore loopholes in the script as long as they get entertained and that's what happened in the case of 'Patas' which is also a routine commercial entertainer. That doesn't mean all the films in the similar genre/format could end up successful and 'Sher' stands as the best example.
Cliched Story, Age-Old Screenplay and Lack of Entertainment Quotient make 'Sher' a big bore for the audience. After 'Kaththi' failure, Mallikarjun gave least importance to story and focussed more on mass masala elements. On the down side, The Comedy Blocks weren't as entertaining as they were expected to be!
The Challenge & Counter Challenge of Villain-Hero sets the perfect base for the movie in the beginning. Things go haywire with the poorly-etched love story of the Lead Pair. Even Brahmi's comedy track failed to keep the viewers in splits. The only relief comes in the combination scenes of Hero & Villain Gang in the First Half. Had if Villain's role was etched in a powerful manner, Second Half could have been more interesting. But, The Antagonist behaves in a silly manner for most of the time. Even the Flashback Twist wasn't something which blows the audience's mind and it can be predicted.
There are hardly any moments which keep the viewers engaged in 'Sher' even though the Run Time was below two hours. By the time film nears completion, Audience get the feeling it is just another Routine Revenge Drama.
Bottom Line: Sher...A Big Bore!
