By: Tupaki Desk | 4 Nov 2026 2:26 PM ISTIndian-origin Democrat Pia Dandiya has made history by winning Florida’s 22nd Congressional District in the November 3 US midterm elections. She defeated Republican candidate Casey Askar in a closely contested race, securing her place in the US House of Representatives.
Dandiya received 51.9% of the votes, while Askar secured 48.1%. Her victory makes her the first Indian-American elected to represent Florida in the US Congress. She also becomes the second Indian-American woman elected to the US House, after Pramila Jayapal.
Born and raised in Palm Beach County to Indian immigrant parents, Dandiya began her professional career as a teacher. She later became a high school principal in Harlem, New York. Her professional experience also includes serving as a White House Fellow at the Department of Education and working at Apple.
During her election campaign, Dandiya focused on key issues including education, healthcare, the rising cost of living and economic opportunities. Her victory is particularly significant as she won in Florida’s newly redrawn 22nd Congressional District.
She is expected to take office when the new US Congress convenes in January 2027.
Meanwhile, the broader 2026 midterm election results have reshaped the balance of power in Washington. Democrats have secured majorities in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, marking a significant setback for President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.
With Democrats controlling both chambers, Trump's administration could face increased congressional scrutiny, challenges to legislative priorities and greater political opposition during the final two years of his presidency.
