In fact, the Indian community must also be aware of the situation as it could go down the spiral anytime.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations have increasingly affected Indian nationals in recent years, reflecting a broader tightening of immigration enforcement across the United States.Indian citizens form a small but growing share of those facing detention and deportation due to visa overstays, failed asylum claims, or final removal orders issued by immigration courts.
Official figures show that nearly 19,000 Indian nationals have been deported from the United States since 2009. The sharpest rise has been seen recently, with over three thousand Indians deported in 2025 alone, the highest number recorded in a single year so far.
Many of these deportations were carried out through regular commercial flights, while a significant portion involved special charter flights arranged by U.S. immigration authorities. This increase marks a clear shift from earlier years when annual deportations of Indians were far lower, often remaining under one thousand. The surge is linked to stricter border controls, faster processing of removal cases, and closer coordination between enforcement agencies. A noticeable number of deportees also include individuals who entered the U.S. through irregular routes or overstayed student and work visas.
The Indian government has raised concerns regarding the treatment and dignity of deportees, particularly during detention and transit. Diplomatic engagement continues as enforcement actions expand, highlighting the growing impact of U.S. immigration policy on the Indian migrant population.
