Trump Mark Shock: Beware NRIs, No Chances Here

The President of United States, Donald Trump has started to take a very proactive stand against the international population that has been staying in the United States. He is now contemplating something significant on that front.

Reportedly Trump is contemplating the idea of imposing an international tax on transactions that are happening from the United States to global countries across the world.

This could come as a significant blow to the Indian population who have been sending a part of their revenues to India.

House Republicans have introduced a bill on May 12, 2025, that includes this tax on international money transfers by non-US citizens. It’s meant to fund tax breaks and border security, and Trump’s apparently all in, calling it “GREAT.” For NRIs, this could sting: India gets about $83 billion in remittances yearly, a big chunk from the US, so a 5% cut means ₹5,000 on every ₹1 lakh sent home goes to the IRS.

This is going to be a pretty significant imposition, if at all, Trump to go ahead with the same, and we have to see how he would operate with the situation.

Considering the fact that the major majority of the Indian population residing in the United States, have the habit of sending a portion of their revenues back to their near and dear ones in India, this is going to be a tricky situation.
